My first consulting project was working with my parents. They were facing
financial challenges during the Farm Crises of the 1980s. I helped them to
create the financial information necessary to identify and evaluate their
options to reach a solution. They ended up selling half of the family farm to
save the other half. It was a stressful and painful process for them to work
through. In reflecting on their decision, I believe it was the best option for
them personally and for the farm as a business. My mother was battling
cancer, and my father was trying to be her caregiver and keep the farm
operating. The decision to downsize allowed him to focus on my mother’s
needs, and still operate the farm.

From this experience, I learned that there are always options. However, if you are in the heat of the battle, you may not be able to identify any options, or the ones you identify with may not be viable. When assisting clients, my goal is to help them to have accurate financial information as they identify and evaluate their options to reach a solution that enhances their business, whether it is improving the profit of the existing operations, expanding, downsizing, or liquidating.
